Monsoons are just around the corner, and so are seasonal diseases. The pleasant weather activates our taste palettes to make us crave street food and all sorts of delicacies. However, you might never know how contaminated food or water may enter your body and cause diarrhoea. Acute or chronic diarrhoea is extremely troublesome for those infected by it. In worse cases, it could also cause bloody stools. Though it is the body’s way of dealing with infections in your gastrointestinal system, you may help ease the discomfort by following some simple home remedies-
- Stay hydrated: Diarrhoea causes watery and frequent stools. Naturally, your body will lose a lot of water, making you lethargic and weak. Having ORS or clean water has proven to be effective in not only covering up for the dearth of water levels in the body but also in curing diarrhoea.
- Have ripe bananas: Remember when your mother chopped some bananas every time you complained of a stomach infection? Bananas contain a good amount of prebiotics that improve gut health. They are also rich in fibre that adds firmness to the stools. These fruits packed with energy replenish your body with energy, and the potassium in it makes up for lost electrolytes.
- Have some Apple Cider vinegar: The apple cider vinegar you stocked up for your diet regime will serve the dual purpose of weight loss and soothing inflamed intestines. The antimicrobial properties of apple cider vinegar fight diarrhoea-causing microbes. Simply mix a teaspoon of vinegar in a cup of water and have it 1-2 times a day.
- Consume clean food in clean utensils: Storing and cooking food in clean surroundings is as important as consuming clean and well-cooked food. Disinfect your kitchen cabinets, washed utensils and cooking area with a disinfectant liquid. Clean your crockery and cutlery with hot water. Ensure proper refrigeration and give proper time for foods like meat to cook.
- Keep your toilet clean: Needless to say, diarrhoea patients leave a trail of germs on the toilet seat. Toilets must be cleaned with an anti-bacterial cleaner and a brush. It is equally important to clean the bathroom floor with a disinfectant liquid. Patients must ensure they cover the toilet seat after every use to prevent any possible infection.
- Ginger: This wonder spice is the cure for many diseases, including gastrointestinal infections. It is incredibly useful if you are suffering from abdominal discomfort or cramps. A study conducted in Japan reflected that the acetone extract of ginger aids serotonin-induced infection. Grated ginger mixed with honey can be consumed as a home remedy. However, you should not have water right after this. Drinking ginger tea 2-3 times a day is also helpful.
