Shringla in US ahead of UN resolutions on crisis in Ukraine

Harsh Foreign Secretary Vardhan Shringla reached New York, hours before the UN General Assembly and the Security Council are expected to vote for the draft resolution of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine on Thursday.

Shringla, who participated in the Security Council meeting on the collaboration between the United Nations and the League of Arab countries on Wednesday, would be the key to negotiating three resolutions in Ukraine at the United Nations.

There are three resolutions while playing now, two in the UN General Assembly and one on the UN Security Council. Indian Express has learned that the third focus of resolution is in the humanitarian situation.

The first was sponsored by France and Mexico and said to be “strong” in language calculating it against Russia, and supported by the West. Unga will reuse the draft resolution titled ‘Humanitarian consequences of aggression against Ukraine’ by Ukraine and simultaneously sponsored by more than 70 countries. South African resolution is “neutral effort” in Unga. South Africa has submitted a rival resolution for Unga who did not mention Russia. South Africa is a member of BRIC grouping and previously abstained, along with India, at the resolution of condemning Russia.

There is Russian resolution at UNSC, which is critical of Ukraine, and will be important to watch how played.

The third resolution is expected to appear early on Thursday.

Previously, Indian permanent representatives at the United Nations, Tirumah Tweeted, “pleased to receive a foreign secretary @harshvshringla in New York. The Foreign Secretary will participate in the UN Security Council meeting on cooperation between the United Nations and the Arab League league.”

The fact that Shringla has been going to New York when a series of foreign ministers visited India – Greece and Oman’s foreign minister were in Delhi – showing the importance of India attached to this resolution round.
