Nepal Parliament on Wednesday passed the First Citizenship Amendment Bill in the country, which was being discussed for more than two years because political parties failed to falsify consensus on it.
The bill has been discussed in the House of Representatives since 2020, but failed to be approved because of the differences between political parties for certain provisions, namely the seven-year waiting period to get a naturalized citizenship for foreign women married to Nepal men.
In the Low Council meeting of the parliament or the House of Representatives on Wednesday, the Minister of Home Affairs Bal Krishna Khand presented the First Citizenship Amendment Bill in Nepal 2022 in the presence of parliamentary members, and said that the bill had been submitted in parliament to change the 2006 Nepal Citizenship Law and made provisions to provide citizenship as directed by the constitution.
“There are thousands of people who lose citizenship certificates even though their parents are Nepal citizens. The lack of citizenship certificates is increasingly depriving education and other facilities. I am interesting to help create an environment to support a new bill and for headway to implement the law by formulating laws New, “said the Minister of the Interior.
Khand exudes the belief that the new bill will be displayed in the Parliamentary High Council or the National Assembly on Thursday where the consideration of the clause will begin.
Last week, the Nepal government had withdrawn the Citizenship Bill from the House of Representatives after members of the Main CPN-UML Parliament protested the proposal.
In 2018, the KP Sharma Oli government at that time had registered the bill at the Parliamentary Secretariat.
