Joe Biden offers an Indian-American lawyer for civil rights as a federal judge

Nagala is currently as an assistant leader of the main crime unit at the US Prosecutor’s Office in Connecticut District, a role she has held since 2017.

US President Joe Biden has appointed an Indian-US civil rights lawyer as a Federal Connecticut State Judge.

If confirmed by the Senate, the Federal Prosecutor Sarala Vidya Nagala would become the first judge of the South Asian ancestry to sit in the District Court for the District of Connecticut.

Nagala is currently as an assistant leader of the main crime unit at the US Prosecutor’s Office in Connecticut District, a role she has held since 2017.

She joined the US Prosecutor’s office in 2012 and held a number of leadership roles, including the hate crime coordinator. Previously, Nagala was associated with Munger, Tolles and Olson in San Francisco, California from 2009 to 2012.

Nagala began its legal career as a law clerk of Susan Graber on the US Court of Appeal of the Ninth Circuit from 2008 to 2009. She graduated from Juris Doctor from the University of California in Berkeley School of Law in 2008 and its Bachelor’s degree in Arts degree from Stanford University in 2005.

Nagala’s appointment met with four other new candidates for the Federal Bench and two for the Columbia District Courts.

All are “extraordinarily qualified, experienced and dedicated to the rule of law and the American Constitution,” said the White House in a statement Tuesday.

The nomination of Nagala and others continues to satisfy the “promise of promise to make sure that the nation courts reflect diversity one of the greatest assets as a country – both in terms of Personal and professional origins, “she said.
